Pakjemaal integrates a recipe with pre-packaged ingredients. The cooking steps are tangible as inviting pieces with clear instructions, packaged in order. Going through the recipe becomes an experience in itself, comparable with how people enjoy unboxing new hi-tech products. A Pakjemaal box and additional fresh ingredient ensure a good time in the kitchen and a delicious meal. It is also a great gift for the starting cook.

For a design contest about integrating package and product, we considered opportunities for innovation. We found one in our own experience. Current meal boxes are very practical, but they contain almost illegible recipes and package ingredients with an uninviting industrial look.To experiment with form language and aesthetics, we created many paper prototypes. I found it especially interesting to figure out what interactions we could enable by mere cutting and folding. How to collaborate on visual design? We constructed the layout and styling step-by-step. We started out with proportions and a grid that we could agree upon. Then we drew multiple variations in Photoshop and included other people’s feedback. The result is a consistent and inviting look.A lot of effort was put into the visual and interaction details. The iconic illustrations printed on natural looking cardboard give it an easy and tasteful look.
